About Me

How It Began

Yan is a passionate yogi with more than 10 years of experience. She has traveled around the world and learnt from accomplished Yoga teachers from several countries, including China, Singapore, and the United States of America. She has experience with major forms of yoga, including Hatha Yoga, Flow (Vinyasa) Yoga, Yin Yoga, Hot Yoga, and Astanga Yoga.

Yan started practising Yoga initially to get away from the stress and pressures that come with being a graduate student. She has never stopped since. Yoga is soothing, and where there was impatience and frustration, there is now a lot more serenity and patience.

Her teacher saw the potential in Yan, and encouraged her to go beyond what was taught in a typical yoga lesson. Yan took on advanced courses, including instructor courses, and was intrigued by what she learnt. Yoga, as she found out, was more about mastering the various poses. Instead, yoga is about understanding our body, and how we are part of our environment, surroundings and society.

Having been an avid dancer in her younger days, Yan saw many parallels between dancing and her yoga practice. Both activities help to develop suppleness and health through beautiful and carefully designed poses. The poses, while an art to master in themselves, are but expressions of higher level of consciousness and thought.

Teaching as Sharing

Having benefited from diligent practice over the years, Yan is keen to share what she has learnt. She started teaching Yoga to group classes since 2010. She believes that everyone can learn and benefit from Yoga. Rooted in flow yoga, Yan takes pains to choreograph energizing yet comfortable sequences for her students. She recognizes that everyone has different proficiency levels, and designs sequences her that allow newer, less experienced yogis to gain expertise, and which also allow variant poses that challenges more experienced yogis to get better.

Through thoughtful choreography, Yan seeks to help students get in touch with their inner-selves, and feel for themselves what Yoga was meant to really be about, beyond the artful and beautiful poses.
